Patna, September 1: Amid ongoing political rhetoric regarding reservation, Bihar Minister Lakhendra Paswan stated that there has been no discussion in either house of Parliament about abolishing reservation. He described the current debate as “untimely rain,” asserting that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, the question of ending reservation is not on the table.
In an interview, Paswan emphasized that any genuine discussion on significant topics like reservation occurs in the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. He noted that there is currently no such discussion in Parliament, and the topic is only being addressed politically. He highlighted that various communities benefit from the existing reservation system, including a 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections among the upper castes.
Regarding the exchanges between Jitan Ram Manjhi and Chirag Paswan over reservation issues and calls for resignations, Lakhendra Paswan clarified that he is not demanding the resignation of either leader. He acknowledged both as significant leaders within the NDA and the central government, stating that those calling for resignations should continue to voice their opinions, but he prefers to stay out of the controversy. However, he urged leaders to reflect on the issues surrounding reservation and the Dalit community.
Paswan also referenced Manjhi’s claim that 18 Scheduled Caste communities are still not fully integrated into the mainstream development. He suggested that if this concern is genuine, prominent Dalit leaders should step outside their families and provide political opportunities to marginalized youth. He stressed the need for leaders, including himself, Chirag Paswan, and Jitan Ram Manjhi, to move beyond nepotism and uplift those who remain politically disadvantaged. This requires leaders to rise above personal and familial political interests.
On the FIR filed against Rahul Gandhi, Paswan criticized the Congress party, stating that historically, it has not treated Dalit leaders with respect. He cited Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, questioning who could be a greater Dalit leader, scholar, economist, and barrister. Paswan noted that Ambedkar faced significant challenges during the Congress era, even resigning from the cabinet. He accused Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge of continuing to disrespect Dalit leadership within the party. He affirmed that the Constitution grants citizens dignity and legal rights, and if anyone’s self-respect is harmed, they have the right to seek legal recourse.
Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of India’s 7.8 percent GDP growth, Lakhendra Paswan expressed strong disagreement. He remarked that Gandhi seems blind to the country’s economic progress. He pointed out that many nations are facing various crises, putting pressure on their economies. He referenced the situation in Nepal and ongoing global conflicts, stating that achieving a 7.8 percent growth rate in such a challenging environment is a significant accomplishment. He credited the hard work of the Indian populace and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for this success, asserting that India’s economic resilience demonstrates the country is moving in the right direction.
Paswan concluded by stating that government policies have strengthened the economy, and the current growth rate is a matter of pride for the citizens. He congratulated the public on the GDP growth and praised Modi’s leadership.
