New Delhi, September 2: The Ministry of External Affairs reported on Tuesday that five more Indian citizens were safely rescued from the devastating floods in Nepal, bringing the total number of rescued individuals to 163.
On Tuesday, 151 Indian nationals also departed from China, according to the ministry.
The Indian rescue team faced numerous challenges while accessing the tunnels of a hydropower project in the Chilime area. These challenges included limited space, difficulties in using specialized equipment due to geographical conditions, and swamp-like conditions within the tunnels.
The ministry noted that the Indian team successfully reached deeper into the tunnels using innovative methods and temporary floating devices. The team will continue its efforts on Wednesday to rescue those trapped inside.
Additionally, India’s forensic team has expanded its operations in collaboration with Nepalese experts. They are working on analyzing DNA samples to expedite the processing of samples in Nepal.
The recent severe floods in Nepal have resulted in over 1,000 confirmed deaths. The grim discovery of bodies continues along riverbanks in various districts.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, as of Tuesday, 1,003 bodies have been recovered. The highest number, 321, was found in Chitwan district, while 216 bodies were retrieved from Nawalparasi East district.
The authority also reported that 3,916 individuals, including 583 foreign nationals, remain missing. This group includes personnel from the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, and other government employees.
Furthermore, 639 workers from various hydropower projects in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river areas have been out of contact since last week’s disaster.
The Nepalese government has stated that search, rescue, and relief operations are ongoing in the affected districts.
