Shillong, September 2: The Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya and President of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), Prestone Tynsong, dismissed speculations regarding the stability of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government. This follows reports that nine legislators from the United Democratic Party (UDP) may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Tynsong asserted that the NPP has sufficient numbers to maintain the government independently.
Tynsong stated that the rumors about the UDP legislators’ potential shift are merely media reports and have not been a concern within the MDA coalition. “I have only seen this in newspapers. We hold regular meetings of the MDA, and we are always prepared to discuss any issues related to our constituencies,” he remarked.
He emphasized that whenever there are concerns, coalition partners regularly communicate with the leadership, including himself, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar. “All partners talk to me, the Chief Minister, or Sniawbhalang Dhar, and we resolve any issues. I see no problems,” Tynsong added.
He suggested that the speculations regarding the UDP may stem from internal disputes within the party rather than any event that could threaten the MDA government. “This could be due to internal issues and infighting within the UDP,” he noted.
When asked if the potential shift of UDP legislators to the BJP could impact the NPP-led government, Tynsong reassured that the ruling party’s numbers are adequate for stability. “Our number alone is 33. We need 30-31 to form the government, so we have already surpassed that figure,” he explained.
The NPP leader also clarified that his party will not interfere in the internal matters of the UDP or other political parties. “We have nothing to say or comment on this as it is their internal and personal understanding,” he stated.
Despite political speculations, Tynsong affirmed that the MDA government remains stable and will continue to function normally. “The government is strong and stable and will complete its full term until 2028 and beyond,” he concluded.
