Renowned Photographer Raghu Rai Passes Away at 83, Remembered by PM Modi

New Delhi, April 26: Renowned Indian photographer and photojournalist Raghu Rai passed away on Sunday at the age of 83. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Delhi after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Rai on the social media platform ‘X’, expressing his condolences. He wrote, “Raghu Rai will be remembered as a creative giant who captured the vibrancy of India through his camera lens. His photography showcased extraordinary sensitivity, depth, and diversity, bringing people closer to various aspects of life in India. His passing is an irreparable loss to the world of photography and culture. My heartfelt condolences to his family, fans, and the photography community. Om Shanti.”

Born on December 18, 1942, in Jhang, Pakistan, Rai initially pursued engineering but found his true calling in photography. Over more than six decades, he documented the social, political, cultural, and religious life of India. His iconic images captured pivotal moments such as the Bangladesh Liberation War, the Bhopal gas tragedy, the Emergency, the life of Mother Teresa, and the everyday lives of ordinary Indians.

Rai was the first Indian photographer invited to join the prestigious Magnum Photos by the world-renowned photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. His books, exhibitions, and photographs have received acclaim worldwide. A Padma Shri awardee, he also mentored young photographers.

What set Raghu Rai’s photographs apart was their ability not only to document events but also to touch the soul of India. His work consistently reflected sensitivity and human depth, showcasing the joys, pains, struggles, and celebrations of everyday people.

The photography world marks the end of an era with Rai’s passing. His son, Nitin Rai, is also a well-known photographer. A wave of grief has swept through his family and fans.
