New Delhi, June 25: Today marks the 51st anniversary of the Emergency in India, a period often referred to as a dark chapter in the nation’s history. Following the rise of the BJP government, this day is also observed as ‘Constitution Murder Day.’ In this context, several Chief Ministers have shared their thoughts on this significant day.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed on X, “June 25, 1975, is a dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy when the ‘Emergency’ was imposed, attempting to crush the constitutional spirit of the nation. The darkness imposed by Congress during the Emergency severely harmed freedom of expression and civil rights. I pay my deepest respects to all the great warriors of democracy who fought to protect it during that difficult time.”
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the night of June 25, 1975, is the darkest chapter in Indian democracy, remembered today as ‘Constitution Murder Day.’ She emphasized that the Emergency was the greatest assault on India’s democracy and constitution.
In her post on X, she noted, “The decision made by the Congress government under then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi severely damaged democratic institutions. During that time, civil rights were violated, press freedom was curtailed, and freedom of expression was stifled. This decision, born from the arrogance of power, symbolizes Congress’s dictatorial mindset, which unfortunately still plagues the party today.”
Rekha Gupta also highlighted the struggles faced by many individuals who fought for democracy, enduring oppression and unbearable torture. This day inspires us to strengthen our commitment to protecting democratic values, constitutional norms, and civil rights.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma also paid tribute to all the democracy warriors and patriots who fought for the restoration of democracy despite the tortures and oppression during the Emergency.
He wrote on X, “The Emergency, regarded as a dark chapter in India’s democratic history, was imposed by the then-Congress government on this very day in 1975. It was a time when freedom of expression, civil rights, and constitutional values were openly suppressed, and efforts were made to weaken democratic institutions.”
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini remarked, “June 25, 1975, is recorded as a dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy. The Emergency imposed by the Congress government that day severely harmed the core spirit of the constitution, civil liberties, and democratic values. On this ‘Constitution Murder Day,’ I respectfully pay homage to all the democracy warriors who endured struggles, torture, and sacrifices for the restoration of democracy.”
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis posted, “June 25, 1975, is a dark chapter in India’s democratic history when constitutional values were crushed, and the Emergency was imposed. I salute all the patriots who stood firm against tyranny and tirelessly fought for the restoration of democracy. Let us reaffirm our collective resolve to protect the constitution and uphold the democratic ideals of free India.”
