Remembering Dr. Rajendra Prasad: A Legacy of Simplicity and Service

New Delhi, February 27: India is a land rich with heroes, freedom fighters, and politicians who dedicated their lives to serving the nation. Among them is the esteemed Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Born in the village of Ziradei in Bihar’s Siwan district, Dr. Prasad’s death anniversary is observed today. His father, Mahadev Sahai, was a scholar in Sanskrit and Persian.

Dr. Prasad’s simplicity was remarkable. Even after serving as the country’s first President for twelve years, he lived a life akin to that of an ordinary citizen. He maintained a lifestyle that allowed even the poorest members of society to feel connected to him. His genuine personality created no barriers between him and the people.

His moral integrity and simplicity were evident when, after leaving office, he declined any government medical assistance despite his declining health. Choosing to forgo luxuries, he returned to the dilapidated thatched house in Patna where his political journey began. He expressed his loyalty to his roots by stating, “I will return to where I started.”

Dr. Prasad was among the rare presidents who prioritized public service and frugality over the trappings of power. During his tenure, the presidential salary was set at ₹10,000, but he voluntarily accepted only ₹5,000. His commitment to ideals was so strong that in the final years of his term, he took only 25% of his salary, amounting to ₹2,500.

He preferred to handle most personal tasks himself and never indulged in lavish government comforts, employing only one assistant. To maintain integrity in public life, he refused to accept any gifts.

From a young age, Dr. Prasad was exceptionally gifted. He began studying Persian at the age of five. After completing his early education at a school in Chapra, he enrolled at the prestigious Presidency College in Kolkata. In 1902, he passed the Intermediate examination with first-class honors and received the Robert Fellowship. He later earned an MA in Economics and graduated with a gold medal in Law (LLB) in 1915. He was the first person to receive a Doctor of Law degree from Allahabad University.

Despite achieving great success in law, he was drawn to serve the nation. Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, he actively participated in the freedom movement. He abandoned his successful legal career during the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1920 and dedicated himself entirely to the cause of independence. His involvement in movements like the Champaran Satyagraha, Salt Satyagraha, Quit India Movement, and Individual Satyagraha was pivotal. Despite facing imprisonment and hardships, he remained steadfast.

Dr. Prasad was elected President of the Indian National Congress multiple times. His organizational skills, calm demeanor, and impartial perspective established him as a national leader. He played a crucial role in the constitution-making process, skillfully presiding over the finalization of the constitution on November 26, 1949.

On January 26, 1950, with the establishment of the Republic of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first President. He is the only president to have been elected for two consecutive terms. Even while residing in the Presidential Palace, he led a simple life, wearing khadi, adhering to a vegetarian diet, and engaging in regular prayer. Besides his presidency, he also served as the Minister of Agriculture and Food in India’s first cabinet in 1946 and 1947. In 1962, he was honored with the Bharat Ratna.

After retiring from the presidency, he returned to Patna on May 14, 1962, and lived at Sadakat Ashram. He passed away on February 28, 1963, at the Bihar Vidyapeeth campus. The room where he spent his final days has been converted into a museum, preserving his memories.

Known as ‘Rashtrapita,’ Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s life exemplifies sacrifice, simplicity, and dedication. His contributions from the freedom struggle to the formation of a republic are unforgettable. On his death anniversary, the nation remembers him with gratitude, and his life story continues to inspire future generations.
