Amritsar, June 15: An Amritsar district court granted anticipatory bail to Bikram Singh Majithia, a leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), and two others on Monday. This decision comes in connection with an incident where they allegedly attempted to free a prisoner from a police station. Prior to this, Majithia’s legal advisor, Bikramjeet Baath, was cleared by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) after informing the court that his presence was not required in the case. Baath was also named in the First Information Report (FIR).
As a lawyer, Baath accompanied Majithia to obtain a copy of the FIR filed against Akali supporter Jobanpreet Singh. Party spokesperson Arshdeep Kaler stated that this ruling highlights the fabricated cases allegedly initiated by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to silence its opponents. He accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and police officials of violating constitutional boundaries.
Kaler noted that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had deemed the arrest of Jobanpreet Singh unconstitutional. He explained that Majithia participated in protests led by Singh’s family and the Kirti Kisan Union to ensure Singh’s release after his detention at the police station. Kaler emphasized that this ruling further exposes the vindictive actions of the Punjab government, police, and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
According to police, Majithia and his supporters allegedly entered the police station and attempted to forcibly release Jobanpreet. They accused Majithia of snatching a sub-inspector’s mobile phone and tearing up official documents. Following these events, a case was registered against Majithia and others for obstructing government officials and creating a disturbance at the police station. Police have been conducting raids to arrest him in connection with this case. They also claimed that Majithia and his associates brandished weapons inside the police station and damaged case files.
