Hyderabad, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : In Hyderabad, on September 28, the ruling Congress party in Telangana organized a significant protest. The demonstration aimed to call for the resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing alleged discrepancies in voter lists during a Special Intensive Review (SIR) conducted by the Election Commission.
Following a nationwide call for protests by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), leaders and workers from the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) marched to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
Prominent figures at the protest included Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, TPCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud, Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Sridhar Babu, along with MPs Chamalakiran Kumar Reddy and Anil Kumar Yadav.
After the rally, Congress leaders met with CEO C. Sudarshan Reddy and presented a memorandum demanding the immediate resignation of Gyanesh Kumar.
Protesters gathered near the statue of Indira Gandhi on Necklace Road, chanting slogans against the Chief Election Commissioner and the ruling BJP government. Signs reading “Vote Theft” and “Enemies of Democracy” were prominently displayed.
The crowd then proceeded towards the CEO’s office located at BRK Bhavan near the Secretariat. During the demonstration, an effigy of the Election Commission was also burned.
Holding a copy of the Indian Constitution, Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka urged all democratic forces to join Congress in this struggle. He claimed that Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has long warned about systematic attempts to undermine citizens’ voting rights and alleged “vote theft,” asserting that these concerns have now been validated.
Vikramarka further stated that two other election commissioners had acknowledged the removal of citizens’ votes under the guise of SIR, labeling it unfortunate for the country’s democracy.
He emphasized that Rahul Gandhi has consistently fought to protect the Constitution and citizens’ voting rights. Vikramarka argued that the right to vote is fundamental to democracy, and any threat to this right raises serious questions about the state of democracy in the country.
He called on all political parties that believe in democracy and the Constitution to set aside their differences and unite with Congress. Vikramarka reiterated the party’s commitment to safeguarding every citizen’s voting rights, stating that the fight will continue until this goal is achieved.
Addressing the protesters, TPCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud accused the Election Commission of becoming a tool for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, asserting that such a situation has never been witnessed since India’s independence.
Former Minister Danam Nagendra demanded that the Supreme Court take suo motu cognizance of the allegations against the Chief Election Commissioner.
