New Delhi, February 25: The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namoh Bharat Corridor has achieved an unprecedented milestone in ridership following the inauguration of its remaining sections and the Meerut Metro. On the first full operational day, over 100,000 passengers traveled along the corridor, marking the highest number recorded to date. Previously, the average daily ridership was around 60,000, indicating a remarkable 70% increase.
The busiest station on the corridor was Begumpul, located in the heart of Meerut city, which recorded the highest passenger numbers. This underground station is strategically situated between the Abu Lane Market and major commercial areas, serving both the Namoh Bharat and Meerut Metro services. With its inauguration, this station has emerged as the city’s primary mobility hub.
Anand Vihar station followed closely, serving as the largest multi-modal transit hub on the corridor. It provides direct connectivity to Anand Vihar Railway Station, the Delhi Metro’s Pink and Blue lines, Swami Vivekanand ISBT, Kaushambi bus stand, and city bus services.
Ghaziabad station also reported high ridership, acting as a crucial gateway between Delhi and Meerut. It is connected to the Shahid Sthal station on the Delhi Metro’s Red Line via a foot overbridge. Newly inaugurated stations like Sarai Kale Khan, Shatabdi Nagar, and Modipuram also saw significant crowds, with New Ashok Nagar station experiencing a notable increase in passenger numbers.
In addition to daily commuters, many families and young people traveled to experience the new service. Passengers praised the high-speed, fully air-conditioned, and comfortable trains. Social media was abuzz with selfies and videos shared by travelers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 5 km stretch from New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan and a 21 km segment from Meerut South to Modipuram on February 22. This brought the entire corridor, featuring 15 stations from Sarai Kale Khan to Modipuram, into operation. With a design speed of 135 km/h and a maximum operational speed of 120 km/h, the Meerut Metro has become the fastest metro system in the country.
This 21 km segment includes 12 stations, such as Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram interchange station. The record ridership on the first day clearly indicates that residents of the National Capital Region are rapidly embracing a fast, safe, and integrated public transportation system. This project is seen as the beginning of a new era of modern and passenger-centric mobility in the region.
