Violence Erupts in Darbhanga: Police Officer Shot, Suspect Lynched by Mob

Patna, June 26: A violent incident in Ojhaul village, Darbhanga district, has left a police officer critically injured and a suspected criminal dead at the hands of a mob.

The injured officer has been identified as Mohammad Mobin, who was stationed at Patna Civil Court and had returned to his village just two days prior. He sustained a gunshot wound and is currently hospitalized in serious condition at a private facility in the Allapatti area of Darbhanga.

The deceased has been identified as Sunil Sahni, a resident of the same village. Initial reports suggest that Sahni, along with some associates, returned to the village around 4:30 AM on Friday. Villagers allege that he vandalized decorative lights placed near the Imamabad ahead of the Muharram festival.

This act provoked local residents, leading to a confrontation. During the altercation, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Mobin reportedly intervened in an attempt to defuse the situation. According to police sources and villagers, Sahni then fired a shot, hitting the officer in the abdomen. Following the shooting, villagers and bystanders pursued Sahni, capturing him as he attempted to flee.

The mob subsequently attacked him, using sharp weapons, resulting in his death at the scene. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the mob violence.

Investigators recovered two empty cartridges and a blood-stained ‘farsa’ (a traditional axe-like weapon) from the site. Police have reported that the firearm allegedly used in the incident is currently missing, with reports suggesting an unidentified individual may have taken it from the scene.

Local residents claim that tensions involving Sunil Sahni have persisted for years, including disputes related to an interfaith marriage that occurred nearly three years ago. According to villagers, Sahni married Sania, the daughter of a local resident, who is related to Sub-Inspector Mobin. Family members reportedly opposed this marriage.

Police officials have not clarified whether this longstanding dispute is directly linked to Friday’s violence. They also noted that Sahni had previous criminal cases registered against him.

Residents allege that he was involved in other violent incidents in recent months, although these claims are still under investigation. Senior Superintendent of Police Jaganath Reddy visited Ojhaul village to assess the situation. He instructed officials to identify and apprehend others present during the incident.

A forensic team also visited the scene to collect evidence for further investigation. As a precaution, a heavy police presence has been deployed in the village, with additional security stationed outside the post-mortem facility at Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital.

Officers from Bahadurpur Police Station are conducting raids to locate Sahni’s alleged accomplices present during the incident. Police have stated that the situation in the village is currently under control, while investigations into the officer’s shooting and the subsequent mob lynching continue.
