New Delhi, June 21: The FIFA World Cup 2026 is witnessing an unprecedented surge in goals. In just 33 matches, the tournament has surpassed the remarkable milestone of 100 goals, marking the fastest achievement in the past 68 years. This is the fewest matches required to reach 100 goals in a World Cup edition since 1958.
Julian Quinones of Mexico kicked off the scoring on June 12, leading his team to a 2-0 victory over South Africa. The 100th goal of this year’s tournament was scored by Cody Gakpo of the Netherlands during their 5-1 triumph over Sweden. Achieving 100 goals in only 33 matches is the best performance in the tournament’s 68-year history.
Previously, the World Cups of 1982 and 2014 reached the 100-goal mark in 36 matches, while the tournaments in 1978 and 1994 took 38 matches. However, the fastest 100 goals were recorded in the 1954 World Cup held in Switzerland, where it took only 20 matches to reach this milestone. West Germany won that tournament.
Additionally, the Netherlands has achieved a significant milestone by becoming only the eighth team in FIFA World Cup history to score 100 goals. They decisively defeated Sweden 5-1, securing the top position in Group F. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each netted two goals for the team.
Brian scored in the 5th and 17th minutes, while Cody found the net in the 47th and 54th minutes. The fifth goal for the Netherlands was scored by Crycencio Summerville. Sweden’s only goal came from Anthony Elanga in the 59th minute. A total of 48 teams are participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026, divided into 12 groups, with a total of 104 matches scheduled.
