New Delhi, March 24: In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, increasing work demands, prolonged screen time, and irregular routines have led to heightened mental stress and physical fatigue. In this context, the ancient yoga technique Mahamudra emerges as an effective practice that can strengthen the body and enhance both health and mental balance.
Yoga scriptures refer to Mahamudra as the “stairway to nectar,” meaning this practice detoxifies the body and revitalizes it with new energy. The term ‘Mahamudra’ is derived from Sanskrit, where ‘maha’ means great, and ‘mudra’ signifies a position that brings joy.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH and yogic traditions, Mahamudra is an advanced Hatha yoga practice that is extremely effective for mental peace, physical energy balance, and spiritual growth. It is believed to help reduce stress and improve blood circulation.
This posture activates the Swadhisthana chakra, alleviating both physical and mental fatigue. Practicing it helps regulate Apana Vayu (one of the five main pranas located in the pelvic area), which aids in awakening the dormant Kundalini energy within the body.
Mahamudra is quite easy to perform, although it may be slightly challenging for beginners. However, with regular practice, numerous benefits can be achieved. To begin, sit comfortably in Sukhasana or Padmasana. Stretch both legs forward. Bend the right leg and place the heel near the perineum (the area between the anus and genitals). Keep the left leg straight. Take a deep breath and, while holding your breath (Kumbhaka), lean forward.
With both hands, grasp the left big toe and bring your head towards the knee. Engage Mula Bandha (contracting the pelvic floor) and Jalandhara Bandha (bringing the chin to the chest). Hold for a few seconds, then exhale and return to a normal position. Repeat with the other leg. Start with 3-5 repetitions and gradually increase.
If you have back or spinal issues, consult a doctor or yoga instructor before attempting this pose. Pregnant women and individuals with high blood pressure should avoid this practice without expert guidance.
