Chaiyabasa: A wild elephant has caused widespread panic in Goilkera block of West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, after trampling five people to death over the last three days. The incidents have alarmed local residents and sparked outrage in the area.
The latest attack occurred late Monday night when the elephant targeted a single family at their home in Kundra Bahda. The family was asleep when the elephant began destroying the house. As the family tried to escape, the elephant trampled Kundra Bahda and his children Kodma Bahda and Samu Bahda to death.

Another child from the family, Jingi Bahda, was seriously injured during the escape. She sustained severe head injuries and was initially treated locally. Due to the critical condition, she was referred to Rourkela in neighbouring Odisha for advanced medical care.
On Sunday night, 56-year-old Jonga Kui from Bila Kundukocha village in Goilkera was also killed by the elephant. She was asleep at home when the animal attacked and crushed her. Her husband Chandramohan Laguri managed to escape unhurt.
Earlier, on Friday night, 13-year-old Renga Kaiyam was trampled to death by elephants while sleeping in a barn in a settlement located in the Saiytawa forest area of Chaibasa.
The Forest Department has been monitoring the elephant’s activities in Goilkera and nearby areas for several days. To control the situation and drive the elephant back into the forest, a 10-member expert team from West Bengal was called in on Monday.
According to official figures, 13 people have died due to elephant attacks in West Singhbhum over the past two months, with six deaths reported from Goilkera alone. The repeated incidents have created fear and anger among villagers.
Residents have urged the Forest Department and local authorities to provide permanent relief from the elephant menace and to expedite compensation for the families of the deceased and injured.
A recent report by the Indian Wildlife Institute states that between 2000 and 2023, Jharkhand witnessed 1,740 incidents of elephant attacks resulting in 1,340 deaths. Additionally, nearly 200 people have lost their lives in elephant attacks between 2023 and 2025.
