Rajasthan Police Warns Citizens About Rising Threat of AI and Deepfake Cyber Fraud

Jaipur, May 20: The Cyber Crime Branch of Rajasthan Police has issued a public warning regarding the increasing threat of cyber fraud involving Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deepfake technology.

According to officials, cybercriminals are now misusing tools like Google Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and X AI Grok to breach biometric security linked to Aadhaar and commit financial and digital fraud.

ADGP (Cyber Crime) V.K. Singh stated that fraudsters initially acquire victims’ Aadhaar numbers, photos, and mobile numbers through phishing, social engineering, and data leaks.

They then attempt to misuse Common Service Centers or UCL kits to change the mobile number associated with Aadhaar. Once the mobile number is altered, OTPs begin reaching the criminals, allowing them unauthorized access to digital accounts and services.

Officials also noted that cybercriminals are now employing AI-based deepfake technology to create highly realistic fake videos that mimic a person’s facial expressions and eye movements.

Such fake videos can deceive facial authentication systems, enabling fraudsters to access DigiLocker, e-KYC platforms, and online banking services.

Rajasthan Police has urged citizens to immediately lock their Aadhaar biometrics via the mAadhaar app or the official UIDAI website. Once locked, fingerprint and iris data cannot be used until the Aadhaar holder unlocks it themselves.

Citizens are also advised to regularly check their Aadhaar authentication history on the UIDAI portal to monitor how their Aadhaar has been used in the past six months.

ADGP Singh further advised people not to ignore SMS alerts regarding changes to their mobile numbers linked to Aadhaar and to keep an active email ID associated with Aadhaar for immediate notifications of any changes.

In cases of cyber fraud or attempts, citizens are encouraged to file complaints at the nearest police station, cyber police station, or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Complaints can also be lodged at the cyber helpline number 1930.
