Jaipur, May 21: The Rajasthan High Court has sharply criticized the police investigation into a jewelry theft case in Nagaur district, revealing that the inquiry was influenced by a ‘sorcerer.’
The order was delivered by Justice Munuri Lakshman while hearing the petition of 80-year-old Khemi Devi from the Utwalia village in the Shri Balaji police jurisdiction.
The court directed the Superintendent of Police in Nagaur to transfer the investigation from the Shri Balaji police station to an officer of equal or higher rank from another station.
According to the petition, Khemi Devi filed an FIR on March 8, alleging that gold and silver jewelry was stolen from her home on the night of March 7. Her lawyer, Manohar Singh Rathore, informed the court that despite providing names of the suspects, the investigating officer, Head Constable Ratiram, failed to recover the stolen items or identify the culprits.
The petition also claimed that instead of focusing on evidence, the investigating officer resorted to superstition, visiting a sorcerer in Alwar district along with the girl’s father-in-law and some villagers.
The sorcerer allegedly implicated the girl’s father-in-law in the theft, leading the police to consider him a suspect without solid evidence.
During the hearing, Vikram Singh Rajpurohit, representing the state government, presented a status report indicating that the investigating officer had questioned several suspects and visited multiple locations. However, the government acknowledged that taking villagers to the sorcerer was inappropriate, although it was confirmed that the officer had indeed visited the sorcerer in Alwar.
After reviewing the case, the court stated that it could not dismiss the possibility that the investigation was influenced by the sorcerer’s opinion.
The court emphasized that an independent and fair investigation is essential for identifying criminals and that no criminal investigation should be conducted based on the sorcerer’s assertions.
Consequently, the court ordered the removal of the current investigating officer and instructed that a new officer be assigned to the case within 15 days.
