New Delhi, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a significant bilateral meeting in New Delhi on September 11, just ahead of the 18th BRICS summit. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including defense, energy, space, trade, and people-to-people connections. They also addressed ongoing conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region.
The meeting commenced with a warm embrace between the two leaders, marking their second encounter this year. Their previous meeting took place on August 31 in Bishkek during the 26th SCO summit.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi presented President Putin with a Russian translation of the “Thirukkural,” a classic work by the revered Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar, which discusses themes related to agriculture and farmers.
Sources indicate that the leaders reviewed the progress of bilateral cooperation in political, economic, defense, energy, space, mobility, and interpersonal relations. They discussed increasing industrial collaboration in the rail sector and tunnel construction, developing the steel value chain, expanding business-to-business (B2B) opportunities, and improving access for Indian companies to the Russian market.
Additionally, topics such as civil nuclear energy cooperation, fuel cycle and lifecycle support, increasing the number of skilled Indian workers in Russia, collaboration on critical minerals, and strategic joint ventures in the fertilizer sector were also on the agenda.
Earlier, in December 2025, both leaders met in New Delhi during the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. During their August 31 meeting in Bishkek, Modi and Putin welcomed the outcomes of the 27th India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, and Cultural Cooperation held in Moscow on August 24.
The two leaders also deliberated on cooperation within multilateral forums under India’s BRICS presidency in 2026, the conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea, and their implications for maritime trade and the safety of Indian sailors.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy are the paths to resolving any conflict. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders agreed to maintain ongoing contact to further strengthen the special and privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia, which has remained robust despite geopolitical uncertainties.
