Rome, August 15: Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi made a statement that has sparked discussions in both India and Italy. Giuseppe Filippo Papik Gerasi, a lawyer based in Rome, has responded to Gandhi’s comments regarding Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Gerasi described Gandhi’s remarks as “unfortunate” and suggested that while political criticism is valid, any personal comments about the Prime Minister of a friendly nation should be made with a degree of respect. “This is my opinion,” he stated.
When asked if references to foreign leaders in domestic political debates could impact India-Italy relations, Gerasi expressed confidence that they would not. “The India-Italy relationship is so strong that comments made in the context of domestic political debates do not affect it. However, using respectful language for foreign leaders is always appropriate, as they represent their countries and institutions,” he added.
Gerasi further emphasized that the relationship between India and Italy is currently very positive and becoming increasingly strategic. He noted that the personal rapport between the two prime ministers has certainly helped strengthen cooperation. “In diplomacy, personal trust and friendship can help build bridges between nations and peoples, and this has always been the case between Italy and India,” he remarked.
Gandhi’s controversial comments were made during an event in New Delhi, where he embraced Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit and criticized India’s foreign policy.
