Sangrur, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : A troubling incident has emerged from the Dirba area of Sangrur district in Punjab. Gulzar Singh, a 50-year-old father from the village of Tur Banjara, found himself in a precarious situation after questioning Cabinet Minister Harpal Cheema about rampant drug use in his community.
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia took to social media platform X to criticize the Aam Aadmi Party government over this incident. He stated, “In the reign of the traitors, asking questions has become a crime.” Majithia recounted how Singh, in a heartfelt plea, asked the minister, “My young son is openly using drugs. Why aren’t you stopping this drug trade? My son is openly using white drugs; why can’t you put an end to this?”
Following Singh’s inquiries, he was reportedly pushed aside by police, while AAP leaders present at the scene pressured him to apologize. Deeply humiliated by this public treatment, Gulzar Singh attempted to take his own life by ingesting poison. He is currently fighting for his life in the hospital.
Majithia also directed his ire toward Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, questioning, “Is this your drug-free Punjab, where asking questions and displaying black flags have become offenses?”
This incident has surfaced amid growing concerns over drug abuse in Punjab. Opposition parties have consistently accused the government of failing to translate its claims of a drug-free Punjab into reality, asserting that the situation on the ground remains unchanged.
Reports indicate that Gulzar Singh’s son has been struggling with addiction for a long time, and the father had previously voiced his concerns. The repercussions of asking the minister a simple question have now left Gulzar Singh hospitalized, igniting a wave of anger within the community.
