Kathmandu, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : President Ram Chandra Paudel of Nepal has urged the international community to take decisive and effective measures to ensure climate justice for Nepal and other ecologically sensitive countries. His appeal comes in the wake of devastating floods that have highlighted the extreme vulnerability of the Himalayan environment.
In a speech addressing the nation, Paudel emphasized that the recent disaster has once again underscored the risks posed by rising global temperatures. The country mourns the loss of lives and property caused by the lethal floods that struck Nepal.
“This disaster not only illustrates the extraordinary fragility of our Himalayan environment but also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers arising from continuously increasing global temperatures,” he stated.
The President’s call to action follows catastrophic flooding in the Bhote Koshi River, which, according to the latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, has claimed the lives of 1,356 people, with 4,994 individuals still unaccounted for.
The floods, which began on August 26, have caused extensive damage, destroying homes, roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure.
Paudel urged the international community not only to listen to the concerns of Nepal and other vulnerable nations but also to take meaningful action to address the climate crisis and its consequences.
His appeal comes at a time when Nepal is grappling with increasing climate-related risks in its mountainous and fragile ecosystems, even though the country contributes relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions.
He also stressed the need for Nepal to learn from this disaster during the reconstruction of affected areas. Paudel suggested that as the nation moves forward with rebuilding, rehabilitation, and economic recovery, it should reconsider its development model. “This is a time for reconstruction, rehabilitation, and economic reform,” he said.
Furthermore, the President expressed gratitude to neighboring countries and the international community for their support in the aftermath of the disaster. Nations such as India and China have provided financial, material, and technical assistance to aid rescue and relief efforts for those affected by the floods.
