New Delhi, September 1: In a recent address in the Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the BJP and the Election Commission. He accused them of manipulating the electoral process, thereby weakening democracy. In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, he highlighted issues related to the voter list revisions in Maharashtra and West Bengal, labeling it as “vote theft.”
Gandhi asserted that the BJP and the so-called “vote theft commission” constantly change their tactics, but their ultimate goal remains the same: to ensure BJP’s victory at any cost and to dismantle India’s democracy.
Referencing the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections in 2024, he pointed out that an unexpected addition of 3.9 million new voters occurred between the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. He claimed that he had previously identified this as vote theft and stands by his accusations today.
The Congress leader also mentioned the special intensive revision process in West Bengal. He noted that 91% of the names removed from the voter list were reinstated after appeals, indicating that 9 out of 10 names were wrongly removed and later added back to the electoral process.
Addressing the current voter list in Maharashtra, Gandhi claimed that 20.7 million voters’ names were excluded from the draft list, representing nearly one-fifth of the total voters. He shared statistics revealing that there were 92.9 million voters in Maharashtra during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This number rose to 97 million for the 2024 Assembly elections, while the special revision list for 2026 shows only 77.8 million voters.
Gandhi questioned which of these three voter lists is accurate. He alleged that governments formed through vote theft do not consider the public important, leading them to ignore the voices and commands of the people.
