Rahul Gandhi Alleges Strategic Voter Removal via SIR Process

New Delhi/Ahmedabad: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has intensified the political debate surrounding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. On Saturday, he accused authorities in Gujarat and other states of misusing the voter list revision process as a tool for “planned and strategic vote theft.”

Sharing his concerns on the social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi claimed a consistent pattern has emerged wherever the SIR is implemented. He stated, “Wherever there is SIR, there is vote theft.” He further alleged that the process in Gujarat is not a mere administrative exercise but a deliberate, organised effort to manipulate votes.

Describing the situation as “shocking and dangerous,” Rahul Gandhi pointed out that thousands of objections have been filed under the same name, raising serious questions about the integrity of the process. He asked how such applications could be accepted without proper verification.

He also accused the system of deliberately targeting voters from certain communities and booths perceived to support Congress. According to him, “Votes are being cut from selected classes and Congress-supporting booths. Wherever the BJP fears defeat, voters are being erased from the system.”

Drawing parallels with earlier incidents, Rahul Gandhi referred to similar patterns observed in Aland and Rajura. He said the tactics seen there are now being replicated in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and other states where SIR is underway.

The Congress leader further accused the ruling BJP of weakening the constitutional principle of electoral equality. He claimed that the SIR process has been turned into a weapon to undermine the “one person, one vote” principle, allowing the party to decide who governs, rather than the people.

These remarks come days after opposition parties in Gujarat made similar allegations. On January 21, addressing a press conference in Ahmedabad, Aam Aadmi Party’s Gujarat president, Isudan Gadhvi, alleged that over nine lakh applications were filed to remove names from the voter list during the SIR process. He described the sudden surge in applications as suspicious and aimed at weakening democracy, targeting voters believed to support opposition parties.
