Pune, August 23: Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP, delivered a powerful address on Saturday, emphasizing that women are the nation’s greatest strength. He launched a strong critique against patriarchal attitudes, asserting that keeping women dependent on others is part of a “Manusmriti mindset.” He urged women to step forward and claim their rights.
Speaking at the ‘Students’ Echo’ event held at the Shri Shivaji Preparatory Military School College Grounds in Pune, Gandhi declared that women are not anyone’s property; they belong solely to themselves. He encouraged young women to break free from societal constraints.
Addressing a large gathering of female students, Gandhi clarified that the focus of the event was not on politics but rather on engaging with youth about their thoughts, educational disparities, and safety issues.
During the program, several students took the stage to share their personal challenges and experiences. Gandhi stated that while many view the economy or military as India’s greatest strengths, he believes the true power lies in the dreams, ideas, and capabilities of 700 million women.
He pointed out that women inherently possess greater sensitivity, empathy, and compassion. Systems like Manusmriti attempt to confine women to limited identities as daughters, wives, or mothers. “Women do not belong to men; you belong only to yourselves,” he asserted.
Gandhi highlighted alarming statistics, noting that approximately 450,000 girls fall victim to female infanticide each year, while 80% of women face some form of harassment, and 30% endure physical violence. About 6 out of every 100 women experience direct physical attacks or sexual assault.
He revealed that nearly 50% of women forgo job or higher education opportunities due to fear of violence, while 45% drop out of education or employment due to marriage or domestic responsibilities. Furthermore, 60% of young women feel unsafe venturing out alone.
Addressing economic inequality, he stated that only 8% of women in India own property independently. Discrimination against girls is deeply entrenched in the education system. He called on the youth to break social restrictions and forge independent identities in all fields.
At the start of the program, Gandhi emphasized that he would not engage in political discussions but aimed to understand the thoughts and expectations of young people. The youth population of India is its greatest asset, and they should recognize their potential to contribute to the nation’s development.
The event also featured discussions on education, the future of youth, social change, the role of women, and the challenges facing today’s generation. The concept of the “ideal woman” was explored, along with the evolving roles and contributions of women in society.
