Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : The Finglu Canal, located in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of Southwest China, was officially inaugurated on September 16, 2026. This canal is deemed a vital project in the new western land-sea corridor.
Construction of the Finglu Canal began on August 28, 2022. Spanning a total length of 134.2 kilometers, it adheres to the standards of an inland Class-1 waterway. The canal can accommodate vessels with a capacity of up to 5,000 tons, marking it as one of the highest standards for inland waterways in China.
Starting from Hengzhou city in the north, the canal runs south through Lingang County in Qinzhou city, eventually leading to the Beibu Gulf via the Qinjiang River. Three major water-level centers have been established at Matao, Qixi, and Qingnian along the canal.
The project has also set four world records, including the highest navigational capacity among similar canals, the fastest navigation speed for comparable vessel locks, the largest water-level difference in water-saving locks globally, and the largest inland water-saving vessel lock in the world.
Furthermore, the Finglu Canal integrates with rail and road infrastructure in the new western land-sea corridor, creating a multimodal transportation system. This development will facilitate the movement of goods from Southwest China to the sea, significantly reducing the inland shipping distance by over 560 kilometers compared to traditional routes. It is estimated that this will save more than 5 billion yuan annually in transportation costs, enhancing maritime access for Southwest China and promoting economic activity in the region. This initiative supports the development of the western region and strengthens the construction of a shared future community between China and ASEAN.
