Jalandhar, July 18: The Punjab Police have arrested Inspector Gurinderjeet Singh Nagra for extortion and bribery related to a murder investigation. He was the officer in charge of the Tanda police station in Hoshiarpur district and has since been suspended, with departmental action initiated against him.
According to a statement from the office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jalandhar Range, Inspector Nagra was removed from his position following allegations filed in the United States and subsequent media reports. He was transferred to the Hoshiarpur police lines to ensure a fair investigation into the murder case, which has now been assigned to an Indian Police Service officer stationed outside Hoshiarpur district.
During the investigation, police uncovered substantial evidence indicating that Inspector Nagra had solicited money from a family residing in the U.S., extorting a total of 1.6 million rupees as a bribe. The investigation was based on technical analysis, financial transaction records, witness statements, and other evidence.
Following the collection of sufficient evidence, Inspector Nagra was charged under Sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 308 of the Indian Penal Code regarding the case registered at Tanda police station. He was arrested on July 17.
Authorities have stated that the accused will be presented in court, and police will seek custody to investigate other individuals involved in the conspiracy. The investigation is ongoing, with additional evidence being gathered.
The Punjab Police emphasized that this action aligns with the state government’s ‘zero tolerance‘ policy against corruption and misconduct. They made it clear that strict measures will be taken against any officer violating the law, regardless of their rank.
