Coimbatore, July 18: Tamil Nadu’s Revenue Minister, Sengottaiyan, announced on Saturday that local body elections in the state will be conducted ahead of the legally mandated timeline set for April next year. He emphasized that the state government will not tolerate any irregularities or corruption in public construction projects and municipal administration.
Sengottaiyan stated that the government is committed to transparent and accountable governance. Every decision taken by the government adheres to thorough investigation and legal procedures.
Speaking to reporters at Coimbatore Airport, he addressed questions regarding preparations for the local body elections and delays in certain civic infrastructure projects. He highlighted issues related to the Coimbatore Race Course Road development project, noting that the tender process is currently on hold due to problems associated with the approval of additional funding. He assured that the government will not compromise on the established rules for any project.
He remarked, “As long as Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay leads the government, there should be no mistakes in the implementation of public projects. Every administrative decision is made with utmost care and in accordance with the law.”
Regarding local body elections, the minister mentioned that the current bodies’ term will last until April next year, indicating that there is no rush to conduct the elections. “The legal timeline for holding local body elections is until April next year. We have ample time, and the process will proceed accordingly,” he added.
Sengottaiyan clarified that tenders for any civic project cannot be canceled without valid reasons. All government decisions are made based on legal and administrative grounds, not political motives.
On the transportation sector, he welcomed the decision for private omni bus operators to provide services at government-determined fares. He noted that previously, bus operators faced unnecessary expenses, but they have now agreed to operate buses at the government-set rates, which is a positive development.
Addressing the issue of drug trafficking, the minister stated that the Tamil Nadu and Kerala governments are coordinating efforts to combat drug trafficking and strengthen anti-drug campaigns.
