Chandigarh, July 2: The Punjab Finance Minister, Harpal Cheema, has approved significant administrative proposals for the recruitment of 619 female Multi-Purpose Health Workers (MPHW) under the Health and Family Welfare Department. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of public health services and improve access to care for the community.
Cheema stated that these positions will be filled through a strategic mix of direct recruitment and promotion quotas within the department.
Out of the total 619 positions, 220 have been vacant for less than a year, while 346 are designated for promotions. These promotions will allow trained midwives to advance to the MPHW role.
Additionally, Cheema mentioned that 53 direct recruitment positions, which were terminated due to being vacant for over a year as per the Finance Department’s guidelines from June 6, 2019, will be reinstated following cabinet approval.
The newly appointed health workers will receive a salary range of ₹21,700 to ₹69,100 at Level-3, as per the Punjab Health and Family Welfare Technical (Group-C) Service (First Amendment) Rules, 2025.
To expedite and streamline the recruitment process, the state government has decided to exempt these 619 positions from the Punjab Subordinate Service Selection Board’s purview, as recruitment through the board typically takes longer. Instead, the entire recruitment will be conducted directly through Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in Faridkot. The Punjab Subordinate Service Selection Board formally consented to this arrangement on December 3, 2025.
Finance Minister Cheema noted that filling these positions will impose an additional financial burden of approximately ₹16.12 crore annually on the state government during the mandatory probation period.
In discussing administrative reforms in the industrial sector, Cheema also highlighted the approval of a crucial proposal from the industry department to restore important direct recruitment positions to maintain departmental efficiency.
