Pune, August 9: The Pune administration has initiated timely actions to reduce road accidents by addressing black spots, accident-prone junctions, potholes, and encroachments along highways. District Collector Jitendra Dudi has directed the inspection of all black spots and the implementation of necessary measures to eliminate them before October 10. Improvements at accident-prone junctions are to be completed within six months, and all potholes on district roads must be filled by August 31.
During this period, agencies have also been instructed to remove encroachments along highways within 15 days.
A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee was held at the District Collector’s office, chaired by Collector Dudi. Police Superintendent Sandeep Gill and Chief Engineer Bharat Kumar Bawiskar, along with officials from various departments, were present.
The meeting reviewed accident-prone locations, road safety, traffic regulation, junction improvements, potholes, encroachments, and road safety awareness in detail.
A thorough discussion took place regarding the measures to be implemented at 43 identified black spots. The Collector emphasized the need for permanent solutions rather than temporary fixes, urging an investigation into the causes of accidents. Structural improvements, including road design, intersections, lighting, directional signs, and information boards, were also discussed. He insisted that speed breakers must be constructed according to established technical standards.
The Collector stated that CCTV cameras, speed monitoring systems, and adequate lighting should be installed at necessary locations. Effective use of technology is essential for geographic marking of accident-prone areas to alert drivers in advance.
He mentioned that improvements at accident-prone junctions should be completed within the next six months, and all potholes must be filled by August 31. Clear instructions were given to ensure that there are no delays in road safety measures.
Moreover, he instructed that encroachments along national and major highways should be removed by the respective individuals within 15 days. If the encroachments are not removed within the stipulated time, the relevant highway agencies, with police assistance, will take immediate action.
The Collector also directed that necessary signage, information boards, and safety measures be strictly implemented at road construction sites to ensure driver safety. Non-compliance with safety standards at these sites will result in action against the contractor and the responsible agency.
