Beijing, August 8: In a recent press briefing, a representative from the Chinese Foreign Ministry addressed concerns regarding Japan’s nuclear policy. According to a survey by the Japanese Public Opinion Research Association, 76% of Japanese citizens support maintaining the “Three Non-Nuclear Principles,” which advocate for not possessing, producing, or allowing nuclear weapons on Japanese soil.
Conversely, 77% of respondents opposed the concept of “nuclear sharing,” which would permit the deployment of U.S. nuclear weapons in Japan. This raised the question of China’s stance on the matter.
In response, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Qian stated that the overwhelming majority of Japanese citizens’ support for the non-nuclear principles and their opposition to nuclear sharing reflects a clear societal commitment to peace and prosperity.
He noted that some officials in Japan’s ruling government have openly promoted a “nuclear option” and attempted to alter the non-nuclear principles. This trend indicates the rising political and military ambitions of certain right-wing factions within Japan.
Lin Qian cautioned that such actions are akin to playing a dangerous game with the future of over 100 million Japanese citizens. He emphasized that the will of the people cannot be ignored. The Japanese government must listen to its citizens and adhere sincerely to its international obligations regarding the non-acceptance, non-production, and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
He further advised Japan to refrain from taking risky steps in nuclear matters and to avoid repeating the historical mistakes of misinterpreting trends and disregarding public sentiment.
