Nashik, August 8: An earthquake was felt in Nashik district of Maharashtra on Saturday night. According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake registered a magnitude of 4.3.
The earthquake occurred at 10:59 PM on August 8. Its epicenter was located at a latitude of 20.424 degrees North and a longitude of 73.682 degrees East.
The depth of the earthquake was recorded at 5 kilometers underground. Due to its epicenter being in Nashik district, tremors were felt in nearby areas as well.
As of the time of reporting, there have been no reports of damage or casualties. Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
The tremors caused mild panic in some areas, prompting residents to evacuate their homes as a precaution.
Earlier that same day, at 2:06 PM, another earthquake struck Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh, registering a magnitude of 3.7. No damage was reported from this incident either.
On August 6, Nashik experienced three tremors: one at 2:56 AM with a magnitude of 2.8, another at 3:38 AM with a magnitude of 3.6, and a third at 5:54 PM with a magnitude of 2.5.
In a separate incident, the death toll from a powerful earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan, has risen to 39. The government reported that over 6,500 people are still residing in relief and evacuation centers. Of the 39 fatalities, 36 were directly caused by the 7.1 magnitude earthquake. One death was reportedly due to heatstroke, considered disaster-related, while the causes of two other deaths are under investigation for potential links to the earthquake.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the earthquake has resulted in 205 casualties in Kumamoto, with 23 individuals seriously injured. The most affected areas recorded a maximum intensity of 7 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, the highest level on the scale.
