New Delhi, February 22: The flames of rebellion are once again igniting in Iran. According to reports from Bangladeshi media, students from several universities have staged protests against the government. This follows a series of large-scale demonstrations that previously erupted on the streets of Iran, accompanied by incidents of violence. This is the largest protest since last month’s deadly security crackdown.
Bangladeshi media outlet UNB reported that the BBC has verified footage showing demonstrators protesting at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran on Saturday. There were later reports of clashes between the protesters and government supporters.
Other protests included sit-ins at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran and a rally in the northeastern city of Mashhad. During these events, university students commemorated those who lost their lives in the violent protests that occurred in January.
Meanwhile, the United States is increasing its military presence near Iran, with President Donald Trump indicating several times that he is considering limited military strikes. Reports have emerged that the U.S. President is being briefed on options for action against Iran. Concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions have been raised by the U.S. and its European allies.
U.S. and Iranian officials met in Switzerland on Tuesday to discuss developments aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear program. However, Trump later warned that the world would know within about ten days whether a deal would be reached or military action would occur. He has previously expressed support for Iranian protesters.
Verified footage from Sharif University shows hundreds of students, many waving Iranian flags and chanting slogans such as “Death to the Dictator” directed at Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. UNB reported that government supporters were also present nearby, leading to confrontations between the two groups.
Similar protests have been confirmed at Amir Kabir University of Technology, and in Mashhad, students reportedly chanted “Freedom, Freedom” and “Students, shout for your rights.” Other locations have also seen protests, with calls for more rallies on Sunday. So far, there have been no reports of arrests.
