New Delhi, February 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Meerut Metro and NamO Bharat Train on Sunday at the Shatabdi Nagar NamO Bharat station. This initiative significantly boosts the government’s efforts to enhance regional connectivity and urban transport in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Upon arriving in Meerut, PM Modi was welcomed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the state BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary. He then proceeded to the Shatabdi Nagar NamO Bharat station to flag off the metro and train.
The Prime Minister dedicated the 82-kilometer-long Delhi-Meerut NamO Bharat corridor to the nation. He also inaugurated the remaining segments of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), which includes a 5-kilometer stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and a 21-kilometer stretch from Meerut South to Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh.
During his visit, PM Modi took a ride on the metro to Meerut South station, engaging in conversations with passengers and students. Two students even shared some pictures with him.
Traveling at a speed of 180 kilometers per hour, NamO Bharat is India’s first regional rapid transit system. It will connect major urban centers like Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut to Delhi more efficiently.
The initial station of the corridor, Sarai Kale Khan, is one of four NamO Bharat stations that will commence operations. Strategically located, it serves as a significant multi-modal hub, seamlessly linking Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, the Delhi Metro’s Pink Line, and the ISBT at Veer Hakikat Rai with the Ring Road. The other three NamO Bharat stations in Meerut are Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram.
The seamless integration of NamO Bharat and Meerut Metro on a single infrastructure will facilitate rapid inter-city travel and smooth urban mobility, setting a precedent for integrated urban and regional transport in India. This initiative is expected to reduce road traffic congestion and significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles.
