Preventing Diarrhea: Simple Steps for Families

New Delhi, August 9: Diarrhea may seem like a common illness, but if not addressed promptly, it can become a serious issue, especially for young children. Fortunately, preventing diarrhea is not difficult. Simple daily habits can significantly protect children and the entire family from this disease.

The most crucial step is hand hygiene. Always wash hands with soap and clean water before eating or feeding others, and after using the toilet. Often, germs can transfer to food and water through dirty hands, which is a major cause of diarrhea.

Access to clean and safe drinking water is also essential. Store water in clean, covered containers at home. Always provide children with safe drinking water. Leaving water in open containers can lead to contamination, increasing the risk of infection.

For infants, breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months is vital. After that, provide nutritious and appropriate complementary foods based on their age. Breast milk helps strengthen children’s immune systems and protects against various infections.

Maintaining cleanliness at home and in the surrounding area is equally important. Always use toilets for defecation and encourage children to adopt this habit. Regularly clean drains and remove accumulated waste, as a dirty environment can promote illness.

If a child or anyone else experiences diarrhea, ensure they do not become dehydrated. Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) and zinc can be administered during this time. Afterward, take the patient to the nearest health center or Ayushman Arogya Mandir for further assistance.
