Praveen Soods Tenure as CBI Director Extended for Another Year

New Delhi, May 13: The tenure of Praveen Sood as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been extended by one year. An official order has been issued regarding this extension.

The order states that the Cabinet’s Appointment Committee has approved the extension based on the recommendations of the selection committee. Praveen Sood, an IPS officer from the 1986 Karnataka cadre, will continue in his role as CBI Director until May 2027.

Sood assumed office as CBI Director on May 25, 2023, initially for a two-year term. He received a one-year extension in May 2025, and now he has been granted another extension.

Before becoming CBI Director, Praveen Sood served as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Karnataka. He was born in 1964 in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh.

On Tuesday, a meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) regarding the appointment of the next CBI Director. Chief Justice and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, were present at the meeting. Reports suggest that the decision regarding Sood’s extension was made during this meeting.

However, Rahul Gandhi raised concerns about the appointment process for the CBI Director and shared a letter addressed to Prime Minister Modi on social media. He criticized the process as biased, stating he cannot abandon his constitutional responsibilities by participating in it.

Gandhi wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “I have expressed my opposition to the CBI Director selection process in a letter to the Prime Minister. I cannot step back from my constitutional duty by being part of a biased process. The Leader of the Opposition is not a rubber stamp.”
