Patna, August 3: The counting of votes for the Bankipur Assembly by-election is underway at AN College in Patna since Monday morning. Early trends indicate that Prashant Kishor, the candidate from the Jan Suraj Party, has taken the lead. However, the counting is still ongoing, and the final results are yet to be announced.
As of the completion of the third round of counting, Prashant Kishor has secured 5,032 votes, leading his nearest rival, Neeraj Kumar Sinha from the BJP, by 1,162 votes. Sinha has received 3,870 votes so far. Meanwhile, Rekha Kumari from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is in third place with 767 votes, and Tanveer Alam from the Lok Janshakti Party is in fourth with 233 votes.
Voting for the Bankipur by-election took place on July 30, with a voter turnout of 34.30%. This election has seen a triangular contest among the BJP, RJD, and the Jan Suraj Party. The counting began at 8 AM with postal ballots, followed by the counting of votes recorded on electronic voting machines (EVMs). Changes in candidates’ standings are expected with each round of counting.
Tight security measures have been implemented at the counting center and its surroundings, with over 300 security personnel deployed. Only authorized officials, candidates, their agents, and emergency service personnel are allowed access to the designated security area.
On the other hand, the BJP has expressed confidence in retaining the seat. Party workers have begun preparations for celebrations in anticipation of a potential victory. Reports suggest that a large quantity of sweets has been prepared for distribution among party workers and the public in case of a win. All parties are now focused on the upcoming rounds of counting, which will provide a clearer picture of the election results.
