New York, September 2: Coco Gauff has successfully secured her spot in the second round of the US Open. She defeated Genep Sonmez with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Recently reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon and Toronto, and winning the Cincinnati Open, Gauff enters the tournament as a strong contender for the singles title.
In her opening service game, Gauff recorded two aces and a service winner. She dominated her next two service games, breaking Sonmez to take a 4-2 lead and maintaining a firm grip to claim the first set in just 32 minutes.
Sonmez improved her game in the second set, charging to the net to change the pace and making it competitive after an early break. The world number 53 created three break points, but Gauff saved all of them, seizing control at the 16th point and breaking her opponent to lead 4-3.
With this victory, Gauff keeps her hopes alive to finish the tournament as the world number one in singles. Her previous highest ranking was number two, achieved in June 2024. If she accomplishes this feat, Gauff will become the first woman to reach number one in both singles and doubles.
Gauff’s next match is a marquee second-round encounter against either Paula Badosa, a former world number two and 2024 US Open quarterfinalist, or Daria Kasatkina, a former world number eight and 2022 French Open semifinalist.
Earlier, fifth seed Mira Andreeva began her campaign at Flushing Meadows with an impressive performance, defeating world number 36, Janis Tzen, 6-2. This victory marks her advancement to the second round for the fourth consecutive year. Andreeva will next face world number 98, Eva Lis.
