Kolkata, June 8: Political activity surged in West Bengal on Monday when former state minister and ex-Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim met with opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee in the assembly. This meeting took place in Banerjee’s designated room, where Hakim was seen accompanied by rebel MLA Sandipan Saha.
Hakim, who has served as a legislator for the Trinamool Congress since 2011, recently resigned from his position as mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. When questioned by the media about the agenda of his meeting with Banerjee and Saha, he declined to provide any details.
This incident coincided with former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee attending a meeting of the INDIA bloc called by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, reports emerged that a group of rebel Trinamool Congress MPs, including four-time Lok Sabha member Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and actress-turned-politician Shatabdi Roy, visited Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav’s residence.
At the time of their visit, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was also present, as he was in New Delhi to sign a memorandum of understanding regarding the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in West Bengal.
The meeting at Yadav’s residence included 20 Trinamool Congress MPs from both houses of Parliament. Notably, Sukendu Shekhar Roy, who resigned from the Rajya Sabha and the primary membership of the Trinamool Congress on the same day, was also in attendance.
The main grievance among the rebel MPs is their refusal to recognize Abhishek Banerjee as the party’s General Secretary.
