Police Detain Leaders of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Tikat) Ahead of Delhi Protest

Greater Noida, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : Leaders and activists of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Tikat) were reportedly placed under house arrest by police in Greater Noida on October 10, as they prepared to participate in a planned protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The union has condemned the police’s actions, labeling them as a sign of government tyranny.

The farmers’ leaders assert that efforts to silence their voices will not deter them from fighting for their rights. Pawan Khatana, the national general secretary and spokesperson for the union, confirmed that police intervened to prevent union members from reaching the protest site. He emphasized that the farmers’ movement would not be halted by such actions.

Khatana urged workers to gather at the union’s camp office in Chapparghad near the Yamuna Expressway on October 10, where they would strategize their next steps. He reiterated the farmers’ commitment to fighting for their rights and respect, ensuring their demands reach the government.

Additionally, a meeting was held at the union office in village Biroondi under the leadership of district president Manoj Mavi. Hundreds of farmers from nearby villages participated, finalizing preparations for the march to Delhi and discussing future strategies for their movement.

Mavi addressed attendees, stating that attempts to suppress farmers’ voices in the country would not succeed. He clarified that the primary goal of the Delhi march is to present the farmers’ legitimate demands to the central government and push for concrete decisions in their favor.

He also noted that the union’s struggle is not against any political party, but rather aimed at protecting farmers’ rights. Ensuring that farmers’ issues are addressed and their demands communicated to the government remains the organization’s top priority. The district administration and police reportedly attempted to prevent farmers from traveling to Delhi, with efforts made to detain Mavi and other union officials, sparking discontent among the farmers.

In response, farmers expressed that it is every citizen’s right to present their demands to the government in a democracy. Union officials have appealed to the administration to respect the constitutional and democratic rights of farmers, allowing them to participate in peaceful protests.

As the farmers continue their preparations for the Delhi march amidst police interventions, activities among farmer organizations in the region have intensified.
