Protests Erupt in Delhi Demanding Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner

New Delhi, October 11 (Daily Kiran) : Demonstrations erupted in New Delhi’s Connaught Place on October 11, as protesters called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission of India (ECI). The police detained several individuals during the protests, including CPI(M) MP John Brittas, who engaged in a heated argument with officers attempting to arrest him.

The protests were organized by leaders from the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M), who criticized the central government and police actions. Brittas’s detention sparked further outrage, with CPI(M) MP A.A. Rahim condemning the arrest as illegal and a violation of constitutional rights. He emphasized that MPs possess certain privileges that should be respected, asserting that the current situation resembles an undeclared state of emergency.

CPI MP P. Santosh Kumar remarked that neither detention nor the filing of FIRs would deter those fighting for a just cause. However, he questioned the police’s treatment of students and youth, stating that such actions are no longer acceptable.

CPI National General Secretary D. Raja declared that their party would not be intimidated by police actions. He stated, “Let them arrest us. We are not afraid. Our party has witnessed British, French, and Portuguese rule and fought against colonial oppression.” Raja demanded the immediate release of those detained and urged that no FIRs be filed against the protesters.

CPI leader Annie Raja accused the central government of attempting to undermine the Constitution, arguing that FIRs are being weaponized against dissent. She highlighted that students, youth, women, and those who believe in democracy and secularism are protesting from Delhi to Kashmir and Kanyakumari. Annie Raja affirmed that the movement would continue until the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation is secured.
