PM Modis Statement on Womens Empowerment Sparks Discussion on International Womens Day

New Delhi, March 8: On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s past statement has resurfaced, igniting discussions about women’s rights in India. He emphasized that in India, women have always been revered, not as inferior beings but as embodiments of divine figures like Amba, Durga, Saraswati, and Lakshmi.

A video shared by the ‘Modi Archive’ on the social media platform X features Modi speaking at a gathering in 2003 when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. In his address, he highlighted that while some of the world’s oldest democracies, like the United States, took over a century to grant women the right to vote, India granted this right to women in 1947.

The post noted, “This was before the implementation of laws, national missions, and the policy framework that reserved 33 percent of seats for women in Parliament. Two decades ago, a Chief Minister was already questioning why women’s power should be limited to the family. Why shouldn’t it extend to village councils, districts, or any room where decisions are made?”

Another post stated, “In 2003, Narendra Modi presented a perspective on civilization, asserting that India has historically regarded women not as inferior but as supreme. He remarked that no other tradition in the world has elevated women to the status of deities.”

The ‘Modi Archive’ further elaborated, “Women are depicted as Amba, Durga, Saraswati, and Lakshmi, each considered divine. Long before today’s debates about women’s roles in society, India established the principle that women’s power should be respected and honored.”

Earlier on Sunday, PM Modi remarked on International Women’s Day, stating, “Women are shaping India’s progress in every field with their determination, creativity, and unique enthusiasm. Their achievements inspire our nation and strengthen our collective resolve to build a ‘developed India.'”

He posted on X, “Women’s empowerment is at the core of our various schemes and initiatives. We are committed to creating opportunities that allow every woman to realize her full potential and contribute to India’s development journey. The achievements of India’s women are a source of pride and serve as a strong reminder of their transformative role in nation-building. As India moves forward, the hopes and contributions of women will continue to guide our collective journey towards a strong and prosperous nation.”
