Jaisalmer, April 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Sunday during the 133rd episode of his radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat.’ He commended the conservation efforts for the Great Indian Bustard, Rajasthan’s critically endangered state bird.
He noted that the Bustard was once a symbol of our desert regions, but its population had dwindled to alarming levels, bringing it close to extinction.
Modi highlighted that significant campaigns are now underway for its conservation. Scientific methods are being implemented, breeding centers have been established, and positive signs of rehabilitation are emerging.
He emphasized that nature and humanity are interconnected and complement each other. Understanding and respecting nature leads to visible positive changes.
Brijmohan Gupta, the DFO of Jaisalmer Desert National Park, reported that collaborative efforts from the central and state governments, along with the Wildlife Institute of India and the Forest Department, have yielded encouraging results in Bustard conservation.
He stated that the use of artificial insemination technology has proven to be a significant achievement in this endeavor. Gupta expressed pride and joy in the Prime Minister acknowledging these efforts during ‘Mann Ki Baat.’
In 2018, the declining Bustard population was a serious concern, but scientific initiatives have led to a steady increase in numbers. Gupta shared that in 2025, 25 new Bustard chicks were born, and in the early months of 2026, 14 chicks have successfully hatched so far. Among these, four were born naturally, while ten were born through AI technology. Currently, the total Bustard population at both breeding centers in Jaisalmer has reached 82, with 58 at the Ramdevra breeding center and 24 at the Sam breeding center.
