New Delhi, April 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the teachings of Lord Gautam Buddha in the 133rd episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday. He also praised an organization in Chile that promotes Buddha’s philosophies.
Modi emphasized that Buddha’s message remains as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. He stated, “Buddha taught us that peace begins within ourselves.” He further noted that conquering oneself is the greatest victory.
The Prime Minister highlighted the increasing importance of Buddha’s thoughts in today’s world, which is rife with stress and conflict. He mentioned that the organization in Chile, guided by Drubpon Otsal Rinpoche from Ladakh, works to spread Buddha’s teachings.
This organization connects meditation and compassion to people’s lives. The stupa built in the Coquimbo Valley of Chile offers a space for peace and tranquility, attracting many visitors.
It is important to note that Buddha Purnima, also known as Vaishakh Purnima, is the most significant festival in Buddhism. This day commemorates three major events in Buddha’s life: his birth, enlightenment (Bodhi), and Mahaparinirvana.
Historically, Buddha was born in 563 BC in Lumbini, Nepal, on Vaishakh Purnima. After years of rigorous meditation, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya and transformed from Siddhartha to Buddha. At the age of 80, he achieved Mahaparinirvana on the same day in Kushinagar.
