New Delhi, July 21: Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda’s wife, Chenamma, was laid to rest with full state honors on Monday at the foothills of Ranganathaswamy Hill in Mavinakere village, Hassan district. Several senior leaders from both the central and Karnataka governments paid their respects during the ceremony.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with H.D. Deve Gowda over the phone, expressing deep sorrow over the passing of his wife, Chenamma. He extended his condolences to Deve Gowda and his family during this difficult time.
During the funeral, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar paid tribute to Chenamma and presented the national flag to former Prime Minister Deve Gowda following the state honors ceremony. Later, he also handed the flag to Chenamma’s son, H.D. Kumaraswamy, who is a central minister.
Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Prahlad Joshi, attended the funeral on behalf of the central government. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was also present to pay his respects alongside the family.
Family members, political leaders, and a large number of supporters attended the funeral. Prahlad Joshi and Shivraj Singh Chouhan offered floral tributes and conveyed condolences from the central government and Prime Minister Modi.
H.D. Deve Gowda appeared emotional during the ceremony, with tears in his eyes on several occasions. All attending leaders offered him comfort. After presenting the flag, Chief Minister Shivakumar honored Deve Gowda by touching his feet.
Prahlad Joshi remarked that Chenamma’s passing is not just a personal loss for the Deve Gowda family but a tragic moment for all of Karnataka. He noted that Chenamma was a symbol of simplicity, dignity, and family values, always providing strong support throughout Deve Gowda’s long public life.
It is noteworthy that Chenamma passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2026, due to a heart attack at a private hospital in Bengaluru. She had been admitted to the hospital on the night of July 16 after experiencing breathing difficulties, chest tightness, and other age-related health issues.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several national leaders have expressed profound sorrow over Chenamma’s death.
