PM Modi Commemorates Indias Nuclear Tests as a Symbol of Resolve

New Delhi, May 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media platform ‘X’ on Wednesday to reflect on India’s nuclear tests conducted on this day in 1998. He stated, “The tests conducted on this day revealed the unwavering resolve of our nation! Following the tests on May 11, the world exerted immense pressure on India, but we demonstrated that no force can bend India.”

In his message, he also shared a Sanskrit verse: “एवं परस्परापेक्षा शक्तिशक्तिमतोः स्थिता . न शिवेन विना शक्तिर्न शक्त्या विना शिवः..”

Explaining its meaning, he noted that strength and capability complement each other. Mere potential is not enough; it must be backed by the power to act. Similarly, power is meaningful only when supported by a robust foundation. Just as the existence of Shiva and Shakti is considered inseparable, the coordination of capability and energy is essential for creation, progress, and success.

Notably, May 13, 1998, is a significant date in India’s history. On this day, under ‘Operation Shakti’ in Pokhran, Rajasthan, India conducted two more successful nuclear tests, named Shakti-IV and Shakti-V. These tests were part of a series that began with three tests on May 11, 1998.

The purpose of these tests was to strengthen India’s scientific and technological capabilities. It was also noted that all tests were conducted underground and were fully controlled, ensuring no radioactive material was released. Data from these tests was utilized for computer simulations and to enhance future nuclear technology.

The entire operation was led by then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Following these successful tests, India gained recognition as a nuclear power on the global stage.
