New Delhi, July 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi engaged in comprehensive discussions on various aspects of India-Japan relations, including trade and investment, economic security, energy, emerging technologies, defense, and people-to-people exchanges.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders shared their views on regional and global development that benefits both nations.
Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on the social media platform X, stating, “The talks focused on our bilateral relationship’s key priorities. Both sides shared three important documents, including a joint proposal on economic security, a joint statement on cooperation in artificial intelligence, and a joint statement on energy resilience.”
He added, “The leaders discussed essential MOUs and agreements related to economic security, clean energy, necessary technologies, and research and development. Both parties agreed on a list of activities to celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.”
During the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, both sides reviewed the full scope of mutual cooperation and discussed regional and global issues of shared interest.
This visit marks Prime Minister Takaiichi’s first official trip to India since taking office, following Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Tokyo for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit in August 2025. This trip underscores both countries’ commitment to enhancing their special strategic and global partnership.
Earlier, addressing a joint press meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, PM Modi announced that India and Japan had signed an agreement on their first co-development project in the defense sector.
After his meeting with his Japanese counterpart at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, PM Modi stated, “The combination of Japan’s precision technology and India’s software capabilities will accelerate and strengthen the global development of AI. Today, we signed an agreement on our first co-development project in defense between India and Japan.”
He emphasized, “A few days ago, at the G-7 Summit, I mentioned that in today’s global turmoil, mutual trust is our greatest strategic achievement. I take pride that the India-Japan partnership has lived up to this benchmark.”
PM Modi stressed that a free, prosperous, and rules-based Indo-Pacific is a shared priority for both India and Japan. The two nations have initiated several initiatives that will lay a strong foundation for stability and prosperity across the region.
He remarked, “Today, both India and Japan are among the world’s largest economies. A free, prosperous, and rules-based Indo-Pacific is our shared priority. As the largest democracy and market economy in the region, we have launched several essential initiatives today. Together, we will establish a strong foundation for stability and prosperity throughout the area.”
