New Delhi, March 17: Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera expressed deep concern on Tuesday regarding the increasing communal tension and atmosphere of hatred during festivals in India. In a video message shared on the social media platform X, he accused certain groups of undermining the true spirit of these celebrations over the past few years.
Khera highlighted that festivals such as Holi, Eid, Christmas, Hanuman Jayanti, and Ram Navami have traditionally symbolized joy, togetherness, and social harmony. However, he noted that in the last decade, a hostile environment has been cultivated, leading to heightened conflict during these occasions. He pointed out incidents where loud music was played outside mosques during Hanuman Jayanti, and disturbances occurred in churches during Christmas.
Targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Khera claimed that hate-filled statements and activities are being promoted. He remarked that it seems like an “entrance test” is underway, where those who engage in more hate speech are rewarded. Referring to a recent murder during Holi in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, he alleged that the incident was communalized, further escalating tensions. He claimed provocative slogans were shouted on the streets while the police remained passive.
Khera cited incidents in Varanasi, Pune, and Madhubani, Bihar, where violence and attacks based on religious grounds have been reported, which he described as extremely alarming. In his message, he also touched on international issues, asserting that India’s foreign policy has always been principle-based and should not overlook historical relationships.
At the end of the video, Khera appealed to the Delhi police and administration to intervene promptly to prevent the escalation of hatred. He described this as a “testing time,” emphasizing that it is not just a challenge for the government or police but for every citizen to uphold social harmony and the nation’s shared heritage. He urged people to unite against forces of hatred and ensure that the country’s unity and cultural legacy remain intact.
