Islamabad, April 27: Islamabad police have arrested a man who allegedly shared a post on social media comparing the Tarnol railway crossing to the Hormuz Strait. Local media reports indicate that he faces charges of disobeying official orders, protesting improperly, and attempting to commit a crime punishable by life imprisonment or less.
According to Dawn, the man posted, “The Tarnol railway crossing is no less than the Hormuz Strait. If it were closed, all our problems would be solved,” likely out of frustration from traffic jams caused by passing trains.
He hoped to resonate with the public. However, Islamabad police took him into custody on serious charges. The FIR stated that his statement violated restrictions imposed on Islamabad.
A Dawn editorial commented, “Islamabad police seem troubled. The stringent security protocols in place for upcoming high-profile guests have undoubtedly complicated the force’s duties. However, this cannot justify the government’s inability to distinguish between security threats and humorous posts. Until it is unequivocally proven that this man posed a danger, he deserves an apology for such unwarranted and harsh treatment.”
The editorial further noted, “Many Pakistanis have found a goldmine of dark humor in the Hormuz crisis. Some use it as a metaphor for their domestic issues, while others joke about whether the Strait will open before the troubled Karachi Bus Rapid Transit project is completed. If Islamabad police wish to present themselves as an advanced law enforcement agency, their top officials should intervene. This case should be dismissed to demonstrate that the government still understands reality, even if it lacks a sense of humor.”
On April 19, the district administrations of Islamabad and Rawalpindi announced the suspension of public and goods transport in both cities. Geo News reported that the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad suspended heavy and public transport services without providing a reason until further notice.
The Islamabad DC stated in a post on X, “Heavy transport and public transport in the city are suspended until further orders. We urge people to cooperate with security agencies.” Similarly, the Rawalpindi DC announced that all private, public, and goods transport had been immediately suspended in Rawalpindi.
