Kolkata, August 21: Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Friday that three new criminal laws—the Indian Justice Code, the Indian Citizen Security Code, and the Indian Evidence Act—are more transparent, technology-driven, and timely compared to the outdated “colonial” criminal justice system.
While addressing an exhibition showcasing the provisions of these laws, Shah emphasized, “The aim of these three new laws is to enhance the protection of citizens, property, and victims, while also expediting the criminal justice process. Furthermore, these laws are victim-centered, rather than solely focused on punishment like the previous system.”
He highlighted that provisions such as Zero FIR, e-FIR, electronic evidence, forensic evidence, and online judicial proceedings make the new laws more victim-oriented.
On this occasion, Amit Shah also criticized the previous Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee. He alleged that the notification for implementing these three new laws was deliberately delayed in West Bengal.
He remarked, “This notification was not issued on purpose due to fears that the corruption stronghold established by the previous ruling party would collapse within minutes once the new laws came into effect. During the Bengal elections, we promised a government of trust, not fear. The first file signed by Suvendu Adhikari after assuming office was related to implementing our three new justice codes and abolishing the old British-era laws. That was where the work of establishing trust began instead of fear.”
Shah also claimed that significant cases such as the RG Kar rape and murder case, the Kasba Law College incident, the assault on women in Sandeshkhali, and the Durgapur Medical College rape case were not properly investigated during the previous Trinamool government.
He stated, “We are emphasizing the increased use of technology in the new justice code so that police can gather more technology-based evidence in their investigations. This will expedite the trial process.”
