Over 700 Arrested for Drunk Driving in Hyderabad and Cyberabad

Hyderabad, May 3: In a significant crackdown, traffic police in Hyderabad and Cyberabad apprehended over 700 individuals for drunk driving during a special operation conducted over the weekend. The operation, which took place on May 1 and 2, resulted in the arrest of 445 drivers in Hyderabad alone. Among those arrested were 371 two-wheeler riders, 26 three-wheeler drivers, and 48 drivers of four-wheelers and other vehicles.

The police categorized the offenders based on their Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels. According to the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), 99 cases recorded BAC levels between 30-50 mg/100 ml, 173 cases between 51-100 mg/100 ml, 100 cases between 101-150 mg/100 ml, 42 cases between 151-200 mg/100 ml, 11 cases between 201-250 mg/100 ml, 12 cases between 251-300 mg/100 ml, and 8 cases exceeding 300 mg/100 ml.

In Cyberabad, traffic police conducted a similar operation, resulting in 283 arrests. This included 227 two-wheeler riders, 9 three-wheeler drivers, 39 four-wheeler drivers, and 8 heavy vehicle operators. The Cyberabad police reported that 222 individuals had BAC levels ranging from 36 to 200 mg/100 ml, 33 individuals between 201 to 300 mg/100 ml, and 28 individuals between 301 to 550 mg/100 ml.

Authorities confirmed that all offenders would be presented in court. Additional Commissioner of Police G. Hanumantha Rao emphasized that drunk driving is a serious offense. If an individual causes a fatal accident while under the influence, they could face charges under Section 105 of the Indian Penal Code 2023, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and fines.

During the previous week (April 27 to May 2), 160 cases were resolved in court. Of these, 12 individuals were ordered to perform community service along with fines, while 148 others were fined only.

The traffic police reiterated their commitment to a ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards drunk driving, stating that such operations will continue. They urged the public to adhere to traffic regulations and prioritize safe driving.
