
Hyderabad, June 8: In a recent crackdown, over 700 individuals were arrested for drunk driving in Hyderabad and Cyberabad during a special campaign conducted by local police.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police launched a two-day operation on June 5 and 6 to ensure road safety, resulting in the arrest of 422 drivers under the influence of alcohol.
Similarly, the Cyberabad Traffic Police carried out their own operation over the weekend, leading to the apprehension of 284 offenders.
According to the Hyderabad Traffic Police, among those arrested, 347 were two-wheeler riders, 33 were driving three-wheelers, and 42 were in four-wheelers.
The offenders were categorized based on their Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels. Approximately 91 individuals had BAC levels ranging from 30 to 50 mg/100 ml.
The police reported that 176 offenders had BAC levels between 51-100 mg/100 ml, 73 between 101-150 mg/100 ml, and 40 between 151-200 mg/100 ml. Nineteen individuals had BAC levels between 201-250 mg/100 ml, while 10 offenders recorded levels between 251-300 mg/100 ml. The remaining 13 individuals were found driving with BAC levels exceeding 300 mg/100 ml.
The Joint Commissioner of Traffic emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards drunk driving violations and assured that this special campaign will continue. He urged the public to cooperate with the Hyderabad Traffic Police.
During the Cyberabad operation, 247 offenders were found riding two-wheelers, three were in three-wheelers, and 34 were in four-wheelers.
According to police, 223 offenders had BAC levels between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml, while 33 had levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml. Additionally, 28 offenders had BAC levels ranging from 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml.
All offenders will be presented in court.
The Cyberabad Police reiterated that driving under the influence is a serious crime. If an individual is found driving while intoxicated and causes a fatal accident, they may face charges under Section 105 of the Indian Penal Code, 2023, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and fines.
In the previous week (June 1 to June 6), a total of 164 drunk driving cases were resolved in courts, resulting in two individuals receiving jail time and fines. The court also imposed fines on 16 individuals, directing them to perform community service, while the remaining 146 were fined only.
