Over 100 NDRF Personnel and Families Participate in Cyclothon for World Bicycle Day

Kolkata, June 8: On the occasion of World Bicycle Day, over 100 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and their families participated in a cyclothon in Haringhata, Nadia district, West Bengal. The event featured a 25-kilometer ride, showcasing the commitment of rescue workers who are typically seen at disaster sites.

A senior official reported that the event was met with enthusiasm, with a total of 105 participants, including 15 children. The cyclothon promoted a healthy lifestyle and highlighted the importance of environmentally friendly transportation.

To further raise awareness about physical fitness, environmental sustainability, and the benefits of cycling, NDRF personnel also joined the ‘Sunday on Cycle’ rally organized by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

The chief guest for the event was Nishith Pramanik, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports for the West Bengal government.

Approximately 1,000 cyclists participated in the rally, which included members from the Central Armed Police Forces, the Army, Kolkata Police, civil administration, volunteers, and various organizations. All participants successfully completed a 10-kilometer cycling rally.

The official emphasized that such events reflect NDRF’s commitment to promoting fitness, environmental protection, community involvement, and a healthy lifestyle among citizens.

Additionally, the second battalion of NDRF took part in a comprehensive tree plantation drive on June 5, in celebration of World Environment Day. Over 2,000 indigenous and environmentally friendly plants were planted at designated locations.

Children attended the tree plantation event with their parents, and officials assured that NDRF personnel would care for the plants until they fully mature.

The NDRF personnel stationed in Haringhata are deployed across the country during natural disasters and crises. They have also been sent abroad for disaster response, successfully conducting several notable rescue operations, including the rescue of a six-year-old child from rubble following the devastating earthquake in Turkey in 2023.
